Three KingsThree Kings is a 1999 American movie directed and co-written by David O. Russell from a story by John Ridley. The movie stars George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg and Ice Cube. It is an unconventional war story with strands of action, comedy and drama. The story has much in common with the films Kelly's Heroes and The Dirty Dozen. Although critically acclaimed, it was overlooked for end of the year movie awards. Its tagline is In a war without heroes they are kings. Initially titled Spoils of War, it was filmed in the deserts of Arizona, California and Mexico. The movie was to be re-released in theaters and on DVD after the 2003 Invasion of Iraq, but Warner Brothers pulled the plug when they decided the project was becoming too political. Director David O. Russell had filmed a short documentary about the Iraq war titled "Soldiers Pay", and an article in the New York Times suggested that he was hoping to influence the November 2004 election. The film was one of the first Hollywood films to be critical of the first Gulf War. George Clooney described the film as "overtly political". |
