Maximum Overdrive Maximum Overdrive is a 1986 film directed by Stephen King. It used a screenplay inspired by (but not based on) King's short story "Trucks" from his collection of short stories Night Shift. King also wrote the screen adaptation of this film, shot in Wilmington, North Carolina in 1986. It was his first and (if the film's critical and commercial reception is anything to go by) presumably last attempt at directing a movie.
