We actually reported to work in an apartment
that Mark Ewing used to live in
:43:12
We took it over as kind of
the development part of Red Hat software
:43:16
and stayed that way till about November of 1995 when...
:43:21
a toilet we had in the apartment kind of exploded,
:43:24
flooded our downstairs neighbor
:43:26
and she got little upset and...
:43:30
the apartment folks found out
we were running a business there
:43:32
instead of actually living there the same time
:43:35
So they decided to throw us out.
:43:37
So at that point, we had about a week to go find
:43:39
our first office, which we did
:43:42
and get ourselves moved in a hurry
:43:57
We started going in again '95 or so
to the venture capital firms,
:44:03
asking, saying, there's something happening here.
:44:06
There's a great business opportunity,
:44:09
to build the next Sun for open source.
:44:14
Well, the venture capitalists looked at this and said
:44:18
"Gee, you are selling systems
:44:21
the software is free. This is kind of scary.
:44:23
We're not sure that we want to put money in. And...
:44:26
by the way, we funded other systems companies
:44:30
and it hasn't really panned out. We are scared."
:44:37
I came to the US about 3 years ago,
:44:40
and the reason really was that I'd been spending
:44:45
like 6 or 7 years at Helsinki University.
:44:48
and decide it was time to see the real world
and not just university life.
:44:53
Especially this area had a lot of the most
interesting work being done.
