:29:03
In a commencement speech such
questions were fitting, perhaps,
:29:06
but hardly the material with which
to launch a presidential campaign.
:29:09
Even those who pay
close attention to politics...
:29:12
probably saw Hal Phillip Walker
and his Replacement Party...
:29:16
as a bit of frost
on the hillside...
:29:19
summer, if not late spring,
would surely do away with all that.
:29:22
Well, now that summer,
:29:23
along with presidential primaries,
is heavy upon us...
:29:25
and the frost is still there,
:29:27
perhaps we should take
a closer look.
:29:29
Hal Phillip Walker is,
in a way, a mystery man.
:29:32
Out of nowhere, with a handful
of students and scarcely any pros,
:29:35
he's managed to win
three presidential primaries...
:29:38
and is given a fighting chance
to take a fourth... Tennessee.
:29:42
A win in that state would
take on added significance,
:29:45
for only once in the last 50 years
has Tennessee failed to vote...
:29:48
for the winning
presidential candidate.
:29:50
No doubt many Americans,
especially party liners,
:29:53
wish that Hal Phillip Walker
would go away,
:29:56
disappear like the natural frost...
:29:58
and come again at
some more convenient season.
:30:01
But wherever he may be going,
:30:02
it seems sure Hal Phillip Walker
is not going away,
:30:06
for there is genuine appeal...
:30:08
and it must be related
to the raw courage of this man...
:30:11
running for president, willing
to battle vast oil companies,
:30:15
eliminate subsidies to farmers,
:30:17
tax churches,
abolish the electoral college,
:30:21
change the national anthem...
:30:23
and remove lawyers from government,
especially from Congress.
:30:26
At this point it'd be wise to say
most of us don't know the answer...
:30:30
to Hal Phillip Walker,
:30:32
but to answer
one of his questions,
:30:34
as a matter of fact, Christmas has
always smelled like oranges to me.
