The Yearling
:02:12 Lake George, Florida. April, 1878.
:02:16 I came across this lake once,
some years ago...
:02:19 ... in a boat that brought me home
after the war with the Yankees.
:02:23 Came down this river,
going back into the wilderness...
:02:27 ... away from civilization,
looking for a place to settle...
:02:31 ... a place to live,
back into the scrub country.
:02:34 It got wilder as I got deeper
into the woods.
:02:37 I liked it. Vegetation was denser.
:02:40 The trees had to struggle
for a breath of air.
:02:43 Even wilder here, as I got back
closer to the sources...
:02:47 ... to the beginning of things,
further away from towns and wars.
:02:52 And then I left the river,
went right into the woods themselves.
:02:56 And here was the scrub country.
:02:59 Not many people lived here then,
just a few pioneers.
:03:02 I found myself a wonderful wife
in a little village nearby.
:03:07 Between us, out of this sea of trees,
we cleared and cultivated...
:03:11 ... a little piece of half-fertile
ground we call islands, like this one.
:03:16 That was many years ago,
but we still live here.
:03:20 We've had our hardships
and our happinesses.
:03:23 This is our home.
It's called Baxter's Island.
:03:27 That's my name, Penny Baxter.
Here's where we live:
:03:31 Me, my wife, Ora,
and our little boy, Jody.
:03:39 Jody!
:03:43 Jody!
