:47:00
And I was a wreck. (Chuckles)
:47:03
Then he checked his thing,
put it down, picked up the phone.

:47:06
They said, "Fine." He put it back on.
:47:08
As he buttoned up his shirt, he said,
:47:11
"I'm told I'm fine, Mr Devane.
We can continue now."

:47:14
So that was my first
experience with Hitchcock.

:47:18
- What did you tell 'em?
- Nothin'. Not a goddam thing.

:47:21
I didn't have to. He knew everything.
:47:24
I think he was moving
the camera behind me,

:47:27
and I said to him,
"Gee, you know, Hitch,

:47:29
when my mother goes to the movies,
she's not gonna recognise me."

:47:31
"She really gets upset when she
sees the back of my head."

:47:34
He took a beat and said,
"Have her destroyed."

:47:36
(Chuckles) Which was wonderful.
:47:41
Hitchcock tried to use the same crew
over and over again,

:47:44
at least the ones he liked,
as do all of us.

:47:46
Edith Head did the costumes,
and Henry Bumstead,

:47:50
who had won two Oscars at that time
:47:52
and a number of nominations,
was the production designer.

:47:55
Lenny South, the cameraman,
:47:58
was actually recommended
by the studio

:48:01
but had worked as only
Hitch's operator in the past,

:48:06
not as a cameraman.
:48:08
Some of the other key positions
were new.

:48:10
But he liked to be comfortable.
:48:12
But even though he worked
with these people,

:48:15
there were very few
who talked to him.

:48:20
(Man) Hitch had wanted to shoot
in San Francisco.

:48:22
I had looked for two days
for this location,

:48:25
for this spooky house on a corner
:48:28
with a garage situation,
and the set was all lit.

:48:31
So, up drives Hitch
with his driver, Ole,

:48:34
and the window went down
just a little bit.

:48:39
Hitch says, W hat are we doing here?"
So, I says, this is the exterior, and so on.

:48:43
And he says,
Why are we doing it here?"

:48:46
I said, "Hitch,
you wanted to do it here."

:48:49
And he says, "Well, how do you
expect me to get a performance

:48:52
out of my actors in this cold weather?"
:48:55
And he said, "That's the trouble
with you young art directors."

:48:59
He says, "You have no imagination."
