Dog Day Afternoon Dog Day Afternoon is a 1975 film directed by Sidney Lumet, and written by Frank Pierson from a Life article by P. F. Kluge and Thomas Moore. The film starred Al Pacino, John Cazale, Chris Sarandon and Charles Durning. Based on an actual bank robbery from the Life article, Dog Day Afternoon tells the story of Sonny Wortzik who holds employees of a bank hostage with his partner Salvatore Naturile during a failed robbery in Brooklyn, New York.[1][2] Wortzik intended to rob the bank so he would have the money to pay for Leon Shermer's sexual reassignment surgery.
