Letyat zhuravli The Cranes are Flying (Russian: Летят журавли, Letyat zhuravli) is arguably the greatest film to come out of World War II. It was directed at Mosfilm by the Georgia-born Soviet director Mikhail Kalatozov (famous for the distinctive always-in-motion camerawork in all of his films) in 1957 and starred Aleksey Batalov and Tatiana Samoilova. It was the only Soviet film to win the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
